Cover: A soil profile from the northern Mojave Desert (Nevada Test Site) that is dominated by gravel in the soil and creosote-bush in the vegetation. The soils are Entisols derived from recent calcareous alluvium. Such coarse-textured soils in a low rainfall region allow deep leaching of salts. Photo by Amrita de Soyza.
