This issue's cover: This image shows an example of the Mehrten Formation, a Pliocene-Miocene age andesitic lahar, near Carson Pass in the Sierra Nevada of California. The soil profile images represent a sequence of soils formed from the Mehrten Formation along an environmental gradient on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada. From left to right the soils grade from hot-dry conditions at low elevation to cold-wet conditions at high elevation and represent the Inks, Aiken, McCarthy, and Waca soil series, respectively. Please see Soil Genesis and Mineral Transformation Across an Environmental Gradient on Andesitic Lahar by C. rasmussen, N. Matsuyama, R.A. Dahlgrn, R.J. Southard, and N. Brauer, pages 225-237.
