About the Cover
This issue's cover: Richard E. Terry and Fabian G. Fernandez, Dep. of Plant and Animal Sciences, Brigham Young University, are standing at the ruins of a rural house mound near the ancient Maya City of Piedras Negras, Peten, Guatemala. The elaborate staircase and fine masonry of the structure are illustrative of the wealth of the rural population 2200 to 1200 years before the present (BP). The objective of their research is to determine the physical, chemical, and carbon isotopic properties of the soil resources used by the ancient Maya. Their research examines the agricultural resources that sustained substantial urban and rural populations during the 1000-year history of that ancient city. Please see Dr. Terry's and Mr. Fernandez's "Soil Resources of the Ancient Maya at Piedras Negras, Guatemala" and other related works.
