This issue's cover: The floodplain of the Rowel Branch restored wetland during the fall of 2002. This site is a North Carolina Department of Transportation mitigation wetland. Restoration was accomplished by removing fill and reestablishing the relic stream channel. At the time of the photo, the stream (located in the middle of the photo) had overtopped its banks and large quantities of water had entered the floodplain (the foreground of the photo). Please see p. 273-284. "Spatial variability of soil properties in created, restored, and paired natural wetlands" by G.L. Bruland and C.J. Richardson of the Duke University Wetland Center.
