This issue's cover: Volcano Cotacachi as viewed from the inter-Andean valley of northern Ecuador (Photo by Franz Zehetner). The soils along these slopes have formed on 3000-yr-old volcanic deposits and are therefore in their early stages of development. However, dramatic altitudinal differences in pedogenesis have resulted in the differential formation of Entisols and Inceptisols at low elevations, and Andisols at higher elevations. See "Pedogenesis of Volcanic Ash Soils in Andean Ecuador" by F. Zehetner, W.P. Miller, and L.T. West, p. 1797-1809.
