This issue's cover: The dominant soils of the Abitibi region in Northwestern Quebec have evolved on clay-rich sediments deposited by postglacial Lake Barlow-Ojibway. They are characterized by a highly porous E horizon (top right) and a contrasting, more massive Bt (top left) or Btg (bottom) horizon. These soils support very productive stands of boreal species. Maintaining their productive capacity represents one of the challenges of sustainable forest management in this region.
