An Efficient, Portable Apparatus for Sampling Subsurface Waters

ABSTRACT

Field studies of element cycling or solute transport require that subsurface water samples be collected. The equipment used to collect these samples often makes poor use of staff time and effort. More efficient sampling can be achieved with the appartus described here. The apparatus is easily and inexpensively built, highly portable, and hand powered. It aspirates samples directly into 125-mL polyethylene bottles. It can collect water from vadose-zone samplers or multilevel groundwater samplers. It is actuated by a vacuum provided by a large-displacement hand pump, also described here.
