ABSTRACT
Effects of deforestation and ensuing land use were studied on an Andic Humitropept developed from fluvio-laharic deposits in the perhumid climatic zone of Costa Rica. Drastic changes in soil climate and land use after deforestation caused compaction and clay mobilization, particularly in the profiles under maize (Zea mays L.) and pasture. The latter process resulted in a change of classification at the order level from Inceptisol to Ultisol.
