ABSTRACT

Deuteration and deconvolution techniques were applied to infrared investigations of bonding between the herbicide picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid) and mineral surfaces. Self-supporting clay films for infrared analysis were prepared from aqueous suspensions of picloram with Cu-treated montmorillonite or with montmorillonite coated with Cu hydrous oxides. The spectral data show clear evidence for a coordination type bonding between picloram and the Cu-treated mineral surfaces. Additional evidence is presented from infrared data confirming the presence of the monomeric acid on Al- and Fe-treated montmorillonite. Deuteration of the picloram-Cu-montmorillonite and of the picloram-Cu hydrous oxide-montmorillonite systems were both extremely slow, requiring several weeks to complete compared to a few hours for the Al- and Fe-systems.
