Estimating Transport Parameters in Soils by a Maximum Likelihood Approach1

Eshel Bresler and Amos Naor2

ABSTRACT

A maximum likelihood procedure that provides a powerful, convenient, and asymptotically unbiased means of estimating various salt transport parameters is briefly described. Details of estimating the dispersion coefficient or dispersivity and the volume of exclusion (per unit volume of soil) are specifically discussed. Data from laboratory column experiments are employed to illustrate the practical application of the estimation method and to compare with the least squares method. The uncertainty of estimating the parameters is incorporated in a systematic manner in the process of inference. The procedure can be expanded to implement additional solute transport parameters.
