Determination of Inorganic Mononuclear Aluminum by Selected Chelation Using Crown Ethers1

Andrew Evans, Jr. and Lucian W. Zelazny2

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to determine whether cation-selective crown ethers could be utilized to measure inorganic mononuclear Al3+ in solutions containing Al-complexing ligands. The dibenzo-18-crown-6 ether was found to selectively chelate inorganic mononuclear Al3+ in the presence of common soil cations (Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Si). Aluminum previously complexed with di-NaEDTA, oxalic, and citric acid was not chelated by the crown ether. The presence of high concentrations of F-, SO2-4, and NO-3 in the sample solutions did not influence the determination of inorganic mononuclear Al3+. Determination of inorganic mononuclear Al3+ was reproducible to within ±0.17 x 10–6 mol L–1 in the 0.8 to 10 x 10–6 mol Al L–1 concentration range.
