Problems with the Sandy Loam Subclass Definition1

M. D. Mays and B. R. Brasher2

ABSTRACT

There are undefined particle-size distributions that are within the definition of sandy loams but not within the definitions of any of the subclasses of sandy loams according to the 1981 draft of chapter 4 of the Soil Survey Manual. These undefined particle-size distributions can be accommodated by appending the following phrase to the sandy loam subclass definition: "or less than 15 percent very coarse, coarse and medium sand and less than 30 percent either fine or very fine sand."
