Contour-Lined Photobase Maps for Soil Mapping1

Robert L. Hodges2, James C. Baker2 and Dennis Darling3

ABSTRACT

Contour-lined photobase maps have proved advantageous to soil scientists making soil surveys in the wooded areas of the Coastal Plain of Virginia. On conventional, unlined aerial photographs, dense vegetative regrowth of cut over woodlands appear as uniform tones. This restricts photo interpretation, making accurate depiction of soil boundaries difficult. Contour-lined photobase maps allow the soil scientist to maintain location within the accuracy of the topographic map, resulting in increased accuracy in soil boundary placement. In the Coastal Plain of Virginia, contour-lined photobase maps have facilitated an increase in the mapping rate.
