ABSTRACT
Three soil profiles containing two types of brittle horizons were extracted using citrate-hicarbonate-dithionite (CBD), a modified CBD, and NaOH procedures. The modified CBD method with a low soil-solution ratio was the most effective extractant for Fe, Al, and, especially, Si. Increases in extractable Si could be associated with the presence of a fragipan-duripan intergrade horizon, but a similar relationship was not observed with a well-expressed fragipan.
