A General Soil Volume Change Equation: II. Effect of Load Pressure1

Juan V. Giráldez and Garrison Sposito2

ABSTRACT

The two-parameter model of soil volume change developed by the authors is extended to account for the load pressure effects expected in the upper 2 m of a soil profile. The extended model equation is based on two principal assumptions: (i) that only the dry soil pore volume and the air-entry water content are affected significantly by changes in load pressure, and (ii) that changes in the dry soil pore volume with load pressure are proportional. These assumptions require only one additional adjustable parameter in the extended model, the soil bulk modulus. The extended model describes available data on soil volume change under load pressure very well.
