ABSTRACT
A physically based equation containing two adjustable parameters (the slope of the load line and the air-entry water content) is proposed to describe the volume of a swelling soil as a function of its water content. This equation was shown to give an excellent representation of 18 sets of soil volume change data for both laboratory and field measurements. In many cases, a satisfactory description of volume changes could be obtained by setting the slope of the load line equal to the specific volume of liquid water and adjusting only the value of the air-entry water content. The proposed equation should be useful in computer models of water movement in swelling soils.
