Measurement of a Cation Exchange Isotherm from Elution Curves Obtained in a Soil Column: Preliminary Results1

D. Schweich, M. Sardin and J-P. Gaudet2

ABSTRACT

It is shown how successive column experiments allow the measurement of exchange capacity and a composition-dependent selectivity factor for the calcium-potassium exchange process on a natural soil. The method is based on a simple model which describes (i) the coupling between the steady flow and the exchange process, and (ii) the solubility of calcite which is taken into account by assuming that the resulting excess in calcium is already in the feed. Comparison with classical batch measurements shows that the column experiments give more reliable results. Nevertheless, the accuracy of the method is limited by the efficiency of the packing of the column.
