A New Method for Determination of 15N-Labeled Nitrous Oxide1

R. L. Mulvaney and L. T. Kurtz2

ABSTRACT

A procedure is described that permits determination of nitrous oxide (N2O) evolved from soils treated with 15N-labeled fertilizer. This procedure involves dilution of 15N-labeled N2O with a known amount of unenriched dinitrogen (N2), reduction of the N2O to N2 in a heated tube containing reduced copper, and determination of the ratios, 29N2/28N2 and 30N2/(28N2 + 29N2), with a dual-inlet ratio mass spectrometer. The procedure described is accurate and precise; it permits measurement of 15N-labeled N2O without interference by CO2; it allows calculation of the average 15N enrichment of the nitrogen pool from which this N2O is derived; and it permits N2O analysis of an atmospheric sample previously analyzed for 15N-labeled N2.
