Phosphorus-Enriched Soil Nodules Detected by Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry1

J. A. McKeague2

ABSTRACT

Marked enrichment in phosphorus (P) was found in 22 of 160 iron (Fe)-rich soil nodules analyzed by scanning electron microscopy along with energy-dispersive x-ray analysis (SEM-EDXRA). Estimated P levels of 10% occurred in certain areas of some nodules, and levels of 2 to 5% were common. Most of the P-rich nodules occurred in mottled albic horizons overlying argillic horizons of imperfectly or poorly drained soils, but some were in C horizons.
