ABSTRACT
An inexpensive, manually operated soil sampler has been developed for determining profiles of bulk density and water content in the top 10 cm of rod-weeded summer-fallowed soil. This sampler is especially suitable for sampling 1-cm increments of loose dry soil overlying a firm soil at a 10- to 20-cm depth. Field data obtained with this sampler showed true variations in soil moisture and bulk density with respect to depth and time even at depths of < 2 cm. Thus it is possible to estimate soil heat capacity over the whole 0- to 40-cm profile.
