The Release of Sulfate from Soil-Applied Basaluminite and Alunite1

ABSTRACT

Release of SO4 from synthetic basaluminite and alunite was measured by plant uptake after mixing various rates of these compounds with Marvyn loamy sand at pH 6.5. The fraction of SO4 released from basaluminite was about one-half that from gypsum, according to S uptake by cotton plants. Alunite released very little SO4. Release of SO4 by basaluminite in soil supports the thesis that SO4 retention and desorption in acid soils can be explained in part by solubility of Al-hydroxysulfates.
