Post-Mazama Natrargids in Dixie Valley, Nevada1

E. B. Alexander and W. D. Nettleton2

ABSTRACT

Some of the youngest Natrargids in central Nevada are in basin-fill containing volcanic ash. South of the salt flat in Dixie Valley they are associated with Torrifluvents and Torriorthents in a continental climate with mean temperatures about 12 to 14°C and mean annual precipitation between 10 and 15 cm. Since there are lenses of Mazama ash below the natric horizons in some of these Natrargids, they are know to be < 6,600 radiocarbon years old.

A representative Typic Natargid in silty post-Mazama basin-fill sediments is described. Illuviation is confirmed by clay skins in the natric horizon. The present precipitation is adequate to account for its development.
