Comparison of Five Kinetic Models for Orthophosphate Reactions in Mineral Soils1

Carl G. Enfield, Curtis C. Harlin, Jr. and Bert E. Bledsoe2

ABSTRACT

The kinetics of orthophosphate sorption with 25 mineral soils have been experimentally measured under laboratory conditions. The 25 mineral soils represent a wide range of physical and chemical properties. Regression analyses have been performed fitting the experimental data to five kinetic models. The five kinetic models include: a linearized first-order sorption, a first-order Freundlich sorption, an empirical function, a diffusion-limited Langmuir sorption, and a diffusion-limited Freundlich sorption. Mean correlation coefficients of 0.81, 0.83, 0.84, 0.86, and 0.88 were obtained for the models, respectively.
