Controlled Instantaneous Application of Free Water to a Porous Surface1

D. Swartzendruber and M. S. Asseed2

ABSTRACT

Instantaneous application of free water to a porous-medium surface is achieved essentially by a device in which the central feature is a plastic plate perforated with small holes. The pressure head of the water can be controlled at a preselected value between 0 and 1 cm. Water enters the porous mdium at essentially zero external flow resistance, while volume and time of entry can be measured accurately. No lateral flow of free water occurs, thus eliminating the disturbing effects of such flow on the porous-medium surface.
