Micro-Determination of Cation-Exchange Capacity by Neutron Activation Analysis1

M. J. Dudas2

ABSTRACT

Neutron activation analysis was evaluated as a method to determine the cation-exchange capacity (CEC) of clay samples. Cation-exchange capacity values of satisfactory reproducibility and accuracy were obtained on 5- to 50-mg subsamples of kaolinite and montmorillonite clays previously saturated with Na, Rb, or Cs. use of Cs as the index ion provided the simplest and most flexible conditions for the activation analysis method.
