Adsorption Interactions in Soils between Amitrole and s-Triazines1

ABSTRACT

A close correlation was found between adsorption of amitrole (3-amino-1,2,4-triazole) and prometone (2-methoxy-4,6-bis-isopropylamino-s-triazine) on 45 soils, indicating similar effects of varying soil properties. Prometone was more strongly adsorbed relative to amitrole by organic matter at a water/dry matter ratio of 100, than in soils at water/dry matter ratio of 2.

Although the predominating adsorbed species were the protonated or cationic forms of the two herbicides, an adsorption interaction occurring on organic matter cannot be fully explained by attributing adsorption to electrostatic effects.

Amitrole and prometone adsorption on organic matter was fully reversible. Amitrole displacement by s-triazines depended on the acidity constant of the competitive base.
