ABSTRACT
Atmospheric nitrogen is fixed in the root zone of rice plants (Oryza sativa L.). Acetylene-ethylene assay showed that bacteria, rather than the root tissues, do the fixation. Although the root tissues produce a trace of ethylene, they cannot reduce acetylene to ethylene. The apparent Km (Michaelis constant) of acetylene was much higher than values from known nitrogenfixing bacteria.
