ABSTRACT
The weight average molecular weight of small Na-montmorillonite particles in aqueous suspension have been determined by means of optical density (OD) measurements. In the wavelength range of
= 4000A to 6000A and in dilute clay suspension which obeys Beer-Lambert Law, the slope of the straight line of log (OD) vs. log
is proportional to the major dimension of the particles. Assuming a disc geometry and the number of unit layers in a clay particle, and working with suspension with a slope near –4, the weight average molecular weight was found by using light scattering theory. The results agree reasonably with other data from the literature.
