The EMF of Platinum Electrodes in Dilute Solutions and its Relation to Soil pH1

H. L. Bohn2

ABSTRACT

An equation is derived for mixed potentials of electrodes which explains their non-Nernstian behavior in dilute solutions and at nonequilibrium conditions. Adding iron(II) sulfate to soil suspensions resulted in EPt/pH slopes which were unrelated to the reaction taking place because EPt is a mixed potential and because the pH is governed to a significant extent by non-redox reactions.
