An Improved Membrane System for Oxygen Probes1

H. Enoch and V. Falkenflug2

ABSTRACT

A probe, designed to measure partial oxygen pressure in a three-phase system such as soil-water-air, is described. The probe is almost equally sensitive in the gaseous or liquid phase of the system. In place of the usual single membrane, the oxygen probe is fitted with two separated membranes and a spacer which form a gas-filled diffusion chamber. The variable diffusion impedance of the environment is hereby reduced to insignificance by increasing the contact area between the environment and that part of the membrane through which the oxygen diffusion takes place. The probe can be used for continuous or discontinuous measurements.
