An Evaluation of the Availability of K in Crop Residues1

Donald W. Grimes and John J. Hanway2

ABSTRACT

A greenhouse investigation was conducted to evaluate the availability of K added in plant residue materials. A high degree of recovery (90%) of the K added in the residues was possible on intensive cropping by common ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum). The K added in corn (Zea mays L.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) residues did not differ in availability and was equal to K added in KCl.

Key Words: K source • K uptake
