ABSTRACT
For vermiculite immersed in NaCl or CaCl2 solutions, the amount of water that excluded Cl was 0.22 g/g and was not affected appreciably by the electrolyte concentration or the particle size of the mineral. The measured exclusion volume corresponds to the interlayer volume calculated from the c-axis spacing and an assumed specific surface of 750 m2/g. The results suggest that vermiculite in aqueous solutions should be regarded as having two distinct and clearly separated ionic regions—the interlayer spaces containing exchangeable cations and water but not soluble electrolyte, and the interparticle solution.
