Sampling Soil and Foliage in a Pine Plantation1

Louis J. Metz, Carol G. Wells and Benee F. Swindel2

ABSTRACT

Analyses were made of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg on foliage from 256 young loblolly pine trees (Pinus taeda L.) growing in a plantation. Soil samples from beneath each tree were also analyzed for the same nutrients. Only a small portion of the variation in foliage content could be accounted for by variation in the nutrient level of the soil. Recommendations (number of plots and number of trees) are given for sampling both foliage and soil.
