Comparisons of Laboratory and Greenhouse Tests for Nitrogen and Phosphorus Availability in Soils1

Turgut Ozus and John J. Hanway2

ABSTRACT

Greenhouse techniques were developed for estimating nutrient availability in soils which would provide standards for comparison of different chemical soil tests. Plants were grown on undried soil samples to which nothing except water was added, but where other nutrients were supplied to the plants. Plant growth and P contents were highly correlated with the results of a chemical soil test. Plant uptake of N during the early period of growth was highly correlated with the initial NO3 content of the soils. Later plant uptake of N was highly correlated with the aerobic and anaerobic rates of N mineralization in the soils, but the relationships were different at different levels of P availability in the soils.
