Determination and Isotope-Ratio Analysis of Different Forms of Nitrogen in Soils: I. Apparatus and Procedure for Distillation and Determination of Ammonium1

J. M. Bremner and A. P. Edwards2

ABSTRACT

Methods of analysis have been developed which permit both determination and isotope-ratio analysis of inorganic and organic forms of nitrogen in soils and soil extracts. In each method, the form of nitrogen under analysis is converted to, and estimated as, ammonium, which is readily oxidized to nitrogen gas for mass spectrometer assay of N15. The ammonium is separated by steam distillation, collected in boric and acid-indicator solution, and determined by titration with standard acid. The apparatus and procedure used for distillation and determination of ammonium are described.
