A Technique for Magnetic Susceptibility Determination of Soil Materials1

Robert L. Jones and A. H. Beavers2

ABSTRACT

A simple and inexpensive magnetic balance can be erected by replacing the weighing pan of an analytical balance with a plastic pan containing a well which receives a sample pellet. The force set up between the pellet and a magnet centered beneath the pellet is measured by adding weight to the weighing pan until the break-away point of the centering needle is slightly exceeded. Results compare favorably with those obtained with the Faraday balance. Data obtained with the balance can be used to determine discontinuities in parent material and to follow soil forming processes.
