Effect of Partial Surface Covers on Evaporation from Soil1

W. O. Willis2

ABSTRACT

Evaporation rates from small columns subjected to convected energy under laboratory conditions were found to be dependent on both percent of surface covered by plastic film and on size of continuous area exposed. Partial covers appear to be most effective when the soil is wettest. When the energy available for evaporation is supplied by convection, the most efficient covering pattern for evaporation control will probably be one which provides as large a continuous cover as practical, as well as one with the least exposure of soil surface.
