Activity Measurements in Water and Clay-Water Systems With Tertiary Electrodes1

Goro Uehara and M. M. Mortland2

ABSTRACT

A tertiary amalgam electrode was utilized in the measurement of CaCl2 and Ca++ activities. Activity coefficients from electromotive force data compared favorably with those in the literature. The relative influence of various metal ion salts on the CaCl2 and Ca++ activities followed the sequence Rb ≥ Mg > K > Na > Li for both kaolinite and Wyoming bentonite. The activities of CaCl2 and Ca++ in bentonite-kaolinite mixtures differed from predicted activity values based on pure clay systems.
