Growth Response of Aerobacter Aerogenes to Ammonium Ions in the Presence of Other Cations1

John O. Harris2

ABSTRACT

Growth experiments using Aerobacter aerogenes in a minimal medium showed that cations of the growth medium do not compete with utilization of limiting concentrations of the ammonium ion. The results indicated that the primary site of the ammonium ion combination with cellular components was not that of the major base-exchange sites of the cytoplasmic membrane but likely within the cell interior.
