ABSTRACT
A laboratory study was conducted to determine the extent of movement of surface-applied nitrate into soils at five moisture levels.
Aliquots of Tillman clay loam soil were adjusted to the desired moisture levels. Ammonium nitrate was broadcast on the surface. The soil was incubated at constant temperature and moisture for 14 days. The soil was then sampled by horizontal sections and nitrate determinations were made.
Downward movement of nitrate progressed to a depth of 2
inches when the soil was at moisture equivalent, to 2 inches when the soil was at the 3- and 5-atm. percentages, and to 1
inches when the soil was at the 8- and 15-atm. percentages.
Nitrate movement was also studied under field conditions on three soil types.
