Soil Montmorillonite Formulas1

ABSTRACT

From cation-exchange capacity, specific surface, thermal, and elemental analysis data, formulas were derived for typical soil montmorillonites selected on the basis of X-ray diffraction analysis after removal of free iron oxides and amorphous constituents. The formula of montmorillonite in the fine clay from Houston soil,

fell on the beidellite end of the montmorillonite-beidellitenontronite series, with more than half of the exchange charge, X, corresponding to 115 me. per 100 g. of colloid, originating in the tetrahedral sheet. Representing the montmorillonite end of the series, the Miami silt loam and Black Cotton soil, the clays had octahedral origin of over half the total negative charge. Nontronitic composition was represented by several fine clays derived from basic rocks.
