ABSTRACT
A procedure is described for measuring volumetrically the rate of water infiltration in field furrows. The technique developed was used to determine the effect of green manure crops on soil structure during the growth of a succeeding crop of sugar beets. At one location a green manure crop of barley increased the rate of infiltration. This result was associated with an increase in sugar production where nitrogen fertilization insured optimum fertility. Tractor travel in furrows was observed to have a significant depressing effect on the rate of infiltration.
