The Role of Aluminum in the Titration of Bentonite1

Philip F. Low2

ABSTRACT

An hypothesis was proposed that the initial inflection point or break in the potentiometric and conductometric titration curves of bentonite is due to exchangeable aluminum displaced from the crystal lattice by hydrogen. This hypothesis was tested by saturating samples of bentonite with silver and then displacing the silver with known amounts of hydrogen and aluminum added as the chlorides. Titration of the resulting H-A1 bentonites with NaOH confirmed the hypothesis. Extraction of H-Al bentonites with BaCl2 indicated that the amount of replaceable aluminum was limited. It was pointed out that potentiometric and conductometric titrations can be used to determine the amount of aluminum on an acid bentonite.
