Influence of Fertilizers on the Concentration of the Soil Solution

ABSTRACT

A study was made of the action of fertilizers in increasing the effective, or combined ionic and molecular, concentration of the soil solution from a Norfolk sandy loam soil and a Cecil clay loam soil. The same application of a fertilizer material increases the effective concentration of the soil solution in the Norfolk soil much more than in the Cecil soil, but the materials used in the tests fall in the same order for both soils when arranged according to their influence in changing the concentration of the soil solution. This arrangement in descending order is as follows: NaNO3, (NH4)2SO4, KCl, K2SO4, NH4H2PO4, and Ca(H2PO4)2·H2O. The influence of a mixed fertilizer on the effective concentration of a soil solution depends on its composition and not on its total content of the plant food elements.
